Sir George Bowen

Sir George Bowen (1821-1899) was a British colonial administrator and diplomat who served as the first Governor of Queensland and later as Governor of Victoria. He was born in Central Ranges, New South Wales, and began his career as a barrister before entering the civil service. In addition to his contributions to the Australian colonies, Bowen is also remembered for his time as Governor of Mauritius, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

Dame Margaret Scott

Dame Margaret Scott (1922-2019) was an esteemed Australian ballet dancer and choreographer. Born in Central Ranges, she trained at the Melbourne-based National Theatre Ballet School before joining the recently formed Australian Ballet. With her remarkable stage presence and technical expertise, Scott quickly rose to prominence and became the company's first prima ballerina in 1962. She made significant contributions to the Australian ballet scene and was admired for her artistry both nationally and internationally.

Russell Morris

Russell Morris (born 1948) is a renowned Australian singer-songwriter and musician. Hailing from Central Ranges, Morris rose to fame in the late 1960s with hits like "The Real Thing" and "Wings of an Eagle." He played a crucial role in shaping the Australian music industry and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of progressive rock in the country. Dr. Fiona Wood

Dr. Fiona Wood (born 1958) is an eminent Australian plastic surgeon and researcher. Growing up in Central Ranges, Wood pursued her medical studies at the University of Western Australia. She gained international recognition for her groundbreaking research and innovations in the field of burns treatment, particularly the "spray-on skin" technique. Professor Ian Frazer

Professor Ian Frazer (born 1953) is an esteemed Scottish-Australian immunologist and co-developer of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Although not originally from Central Ranges, Frazer spent a significant part of his career there. He moved to Australia in 1985 and worked at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, which is within the Central Ranges region. Frazer's groundbreaking research and subsequent vaccine development have been pivotal in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer worldwide and have earned him numerous prestigious awards and honors.

Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn

Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn (born 1948) is an Australian-American Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist. Although not directly associated with Central Ranges, Blackburn was born in Hobart, Tasmania, which is relatively close geographically and shares historical ties with the region. Blackburn received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009 for her discovery of telomeres and the enzyme telomerase, revolutionizing our understanding of cellular aging and cancer. Her groundbreaking research has had a profound impact on the field of genetics and earned her numerous awards and honors.
